KDP Royalties Not Showing — Why and What to Do

If your KDP royalties aren't showing, the most common reason is Amazon's reporting delay. KDP sales data typically lags 12 to 72 hours behind real-time purchases, and during peak periods like Q4, that delay can stretch even longer. Less commonly, the issue stems from account setup problems, payment threshold minimums, or returned orders that quietly erase sales you thought were locked in.

Amazon's Reporting Delay Is the #1 Cause

KDP's royalty dashboard doesn't update in real time. It never has. Amazon processes millions of transactions daily, and your royalties go through verification, return-window holds, and currency conversion before they show up in your reports.

Here's what's normal:

• eBook royalties typically appear within 12 to 24 hours of a sale.
• Paperback and hardcover royalties can take 24 to 72 hours.
• During November and December, delays of 3 to 5 days aren't unusual.
• KDP Print titles routed through Expanded Distribution channels take the longest.

If your book is brand new (published within the last 48 hours), give it a full 72 hours before worrying. Amazon's system needs time to register initial sales correctly.

Your Book Is Selling, But Royalties Show $0.00

This one trips up a lot of authors. You see your Best Sellers Rank (BSR) improving, maybe you even got a notification from a reader, but your royalty report still reads zero. A few things could be happening:

Kindle Unlimited reads vs. purchases. If your book is enrolled in KDP Select, most of your "sales" might actually be KU borrows. Page reads don't appear in the standard Sales Dashboard. You need to check the KDP Reports page, specifically the "Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP) Read" column. KENP royalties are calculated and paid separately, and they only finalize after the month ends.

Pre-orders haven't converted yet. Pre-order royalties don't show until the book's actual release date. If you set up a pre-order and people bought it early, those royalties are held until delivery day, then they trickle in over the following 48 to 72 hours.

Returns wiping out your numbers. Amazon gives eBook buyers a 7-day return window. If someone buys your book and returns it the next day, the sale appears and then disappears. On a slow-selling title, one return can make your daily royalty report drop back to zero. You'll see negative adjustments in your monthly payment report.

Payment Threshold and Bank Account Issues

Your royalties might be accumulating just fine, but you're not seeing payments hit your bank. Two common causes:

You haven't hit the payment threshold. Amazon won't issue a payment until you've earned at least $100 (for EFT/direct deposit in the US) or the equivalent minimum in your local currency. For check payments, the threshold is $100. Some international authors have thresholds as low as $10 via EFT, depending on the marketplace. Check your specific marketplace threshold under KDP Account Settings > Getting Paid.

Your bank details are wrong or incomplete. Go to your KDP account, click "Getting Paid" under your account settings, and verify that every marketplace has a valid payment method. A surprisingly common mistake: authors set up payment info for Amazon.com but forget about Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, and other marketplaces where their books are also listed. Each marketplace pays separately and needs its own banking details.

Tax Information Is Missing or Rejected

Amazon will hold all royalties if your tax interview isn't completed. This applies globally. US-based authors need a completed W-9. International authors need a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E form on file.

If your tax information was rejected (this happens when names don't match IRS records, or when a TIN is entered incorrectly), Amazon sends an email notification. But those emails often land in spam folders. Log into KDP, go to Tax Information, and look for a yellow or red warning banner. Fix the mismatch, resubmit, and your held royalties should release within 3 to 5 business days.

How to Cross-Check Sales When Royalties Lag

Waiting days for KDP to update its reports is frustrating, especially when you're running a launch or a promotion and need real-time feedback. Here's how experienced authors handle it:

Watch your BSR. Your Best Sellers Rank updates much faster than royalty reports. If your BSR drops from 500,000 to 80,000 overnight, you're selling books even if the dashboard hasn't caught up yet. Check the "Prior Six Weeks' Royalties" report. In your KDP Reports section, the Month-to-Date and Prior Six Weeks reports sometimes update at different intervals. Cross-referencing both gives you a clearer picture.

Look at Author Central. Your Author Central sales dashboard (available at authorcentral.amazon.com) sometimes reflects BookScan data that differs from KDP reports. It's not perfect, but it's another data point.

If you've waited 72+ hours, confirmed your tax and banking info is correct, and your BSR clearly shows sales activity but your royalty report still shows nothing, contact KDP directly.
