Getting Into the Right Amazon Categories
On this page
The Category Mistake Most KDP Authors Make
You choose up to 3 categories per format (ebook, paperback, and hardcover each have their own 3 slots) directly in the KDP dashboard — that's the max, and Amazon no longer takes requests to add more. The mistake most authors make is burning all 3 slots on broad, crowded categories where they'll never rank.
Why do your picks matter? A well-chosen category is a chance to earn an orange #1 Bestseller badge, which appears on your book's Amazon listing and dramatically increases click-through rates from search results. It also puts your book in front of readers browsing that category who might never have found it otherwise. With only 3 slots, precision beats breadth — and you can change your picks anytime in the dashboard.
Category Finder helps you find the best 3 rankable niches — including ones your competitors have found that you haven't.
How Category Finder Works
-
1
Enter what your book is about — a topic, not an ASIN. For example: "homesteading," "sourdough bread," "weight loss for women over 50," "cozy mystery"
-
2
Click Find Categories
-
3
PublishRank searches Amazon for books on that topic and analyzes which categories the top-ranking books are actually placed in — not guesses, but real category data from real bestsellers in your niche
-
4
Results show full category paths (e.g.
Books > Cookbooks, Food & Wine > Baking > Breads) with competition data for each
Results are cached, so re-searching the same topic is instant.
Reading Your Results
Each category result shows:
- The full Amazon category path — you'll match this to the category options when setting your categories in the dashboard
- How many books are in the category — fewer books = easier to rank
- Competition level — based on how strong the top-ranked books are
- Estimated BSR needed to rank in the top positions — gives you a realistic target
Look for sleeper categories — ones where the top-ranked book has a BSR that suggests only moderate sales are needed to claim a top spot. These are your best opportunities for earning a Bestseller badge without needing hundreds of reviews.
How to Apply Your Categories
Here's the exact process to get your new categories live on Amazon:
-
1
Pick your best 3 categories
You get 3 slots per format, so choose deliberately: one narrow niche you can realistically rank #1 in, one mid-competition, and one broader for reach. You can always adjust later.
-
2
Set them in the KDP dashboard
Go to kdp.amazon.com → Bookshelf, click Edit book details next to your book, and find the Categories section. Select up to 3 categories that best match the paths from your results, for example:
1. Books > Cookbooks, Food & Wine > Baking > Breads
2. Books > Cookbooks, Food & Wine > Cooking by Ingredient > Grains
3. Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Cookbooks, Food & Wine > BakingMatch to the exact category path from your Category Finder results, then save. Each format (ebook, paperback, hardcover) has its own 3 slots.
-
3
Wait for the listing to update
Category changes you make in the dashboard typically take 24–72 hours to appear on your live Amazon listing. You can change your picks again anytime.
📋 Note
The Category Finder results page includes a direct link to Amazon's official category guidance, so you always have the most up-to-date process for setting categories in the dashboard.
