Your Amazon Listing Is Your Sales Page
Everything a reader sees before clicking "Buy" — your title, subtitle, and description — determines two things: whether Amazon shows your book in search results, and whether a browser becomes a buyer once they find it.
Most KDP authors write a good book but then put minimal effort into the listing. The result: Amazon doesn't know what search queries to match the book to, so it doesn't show up. The Listing Optimizer scores every field of your listing and tells you exactly what to fix — and why it matters.
How to Import Your Listing
There are two ways to get your listing into the tool:
A Import by ASIN (fastest)
- ① Paste your ASIN or full Amazon URL into the import field
- ② Click Import — your title, subtitle, and description pull in automatically
B Paste manually
Type or paste your content directly into each field. This is also how you enter your backend keywords — copy them from your KDP dashboard and paste into the Backend Keywords field.
The 4 Fields — What Each One Needs
Title
Aim for 40–80 characters. Your primary keyword must appear here — it carries more weight than anywhere else in your listing. Use a colon to separate title from subtitle: "Homesteading for Beginners: The Complete Guide to Self-Sufficient Living." Amazon's max is 200 characters, but shorter titles with clear keywords tend to perform better.
Subtitle
Use your subtitle to include a secondary keyword phrase. Max 500 characters — but don't pad it out. A clear, keyword-rich subtitle of 60–120 characters outperforms a rambling one.
Description
Aim for 900–4,000 characters. The description is fully indexed by Amazon for search, and it's also the text that persuades readers to buy. Amazon renders basic HTML in KDP descriptions — use it:
- Wrap important phrases in
<b>bold</b>tags — for emphasis and keyword weight - Use
<br><br>for paragraph breaks - Use
<ul><li>for bullet lists
If your description already contains HTML tags, check the "My description uses HTML formatting" toggle so the tool doesn't count the tag characters against your length.
Backend Keywords
You have 7 keyword fields in KDP Bookshelf, each accepting up to 50 characters. Use unique long-tail phrases — variations and alternate phrasings that didn't fit naturally in your title or description.
The golden rule: no repetition. Amazon ignores any word it already sees in your title, subtitle, or description. Your backend keyword slots should be reserved for phrases that appear nowhere else in your listing.
Reading Your Score
Your listing is scored out of 100. Each field gets individual feedback — not just a number, but specific guidance on what's missing and why it matters.
Common findings:
- Title too short or missing primary keyword
- Description under 900 characters (Amazon rewards longer, keyword-rich descriptions)
- Description using no HTML formatting
- Backend keywords contain duplicate words already in the title
- Fewer than 7 backend keyword phrases used
All previous audits are saved in the Recent Audits table so you can track your score improvement over time.
After Optimizing

Make the changes in your KDP Bookshelf — Manage Your Content → edit book → update the relevant fields

Wait 24–72 hours for Amazon to process and publish your changes

Re-run Listing Optimizer to confirm your score improved and check for remaining issues

Re-run Keyword Gap Map — your updated listing may now cover some gaps, and results will reflect your new coverage

Regenerate your 90-Day Roadmap — with an improved listing score, the roadmap adjusts your upcoming tasks accordingly
